Pelophylax kl. esculentus had a hybrid origin from Pelophylax lessonae and Pelophylax ridibundus
Pelophylax kl. hispanicus is now consider to have originated from reproduction between Pelophylax lessonae bergeri and some carrier of Pelophylax ridibundus genome. Thus, it is conspecific with Pelophylax kl. esculentus
